About a kilometer by boat from Agios Giannis on Antiparos, the uninhabited islet of Despotiko was only used to pasture goats and sheep until the relatively recent discovery of 6 century BC Temple of Apollo and accompanying refectory. The increasingly extensive excavations have revealed accommodation and many other fascinating features and now a dedicated team of archeologists are busy painstakingly restoring the temple. One can rent a boat from Ag. Giannis and visit the dig, entering with the permission of the team, being very careful not to damage any of the precious stones scattered about the site. There are some excellent, more or less empty beaches, where the boats will drop you by prior arrangement, but there are no facilities so you should pack water, drinks, food and any other items you may need for your stay.
