Celebration of Karavola


The feast of Karavola is celebrated on the first Saturday after 15th of August. It is one of the biggest festivals in Paros, specifically in the village of Lefkes, and is celebrated by a lavish local feast. The main dishes are Karavolas, large edible snails, which are cooked either in a rich tomato sauce or fried or served with garlic. Local Parian cheese, chickpeas roasted the oven and Parian local wine are offered as an accompaniment. The feast takes place in an open courtyard next to the Community Hall of Lefkes, beneath the pine forest.
Many inhabitants of the village volunteer to take part in the organisation of the celebration a week before, and create a place suitable for dancing and celebrating until morning. The dances are performed to the music of folk songs and songs from Paros itself.
